Excessive amounts of water and wood don't mix.
Wood is a natural material that swells when it absorbs water and shrinks when it dries. Wipe up spills as soon as possible to keep your floor unmarked, smooth and level.
Grit is one of the biggest dangers to your floor.
Tracked in dirt is like sandpaper on a hardwood floor. Use a walk off mat or an entry rug at every outdoor entrance to catch the grit. Vacuum or shake out regularly.
Avoid furniture glides and spike heels
Rounded headed chair glides and narrow wheels on furniture legs make furniture easy to move, but they can also scratch or permanently dent your floor. Spike heels are also damaging to hardwood floors. They strike a wood floor with more force per square inch than an elephant's foot. Spike heels in disrepair are especially harmful to your floor.
Do's:
  • Wipe up spills immediately
  • Provide doormats to keep dirt and grit off floors
  • Place runners and area rugs at high traffic areas
  • Keep the relative humidity in home between 45% and 55%
Dont's:
  • Use any oil based cleaners, ammonia, Murphy's oil soap or wax floors
  • Allow water to stand on floors for any length of time
  • Walk across floor in spike heels or with any sharp object protruding from your shoes
  • Allow furniture to rest on floors with small metal tips or hard domes
